Skeletal Age

Fairness Built In: Understanding Skeletal Age

Some players grow early. Some grow late. And many get judged unfairly because of it. At COPA, we use a bone density analysis to determine skeletal age — a non-invasive way to see how physically developed a player really is.

It helps us understand whether a player is an early, on-time, or late maturer, and it ensures that every COPA Score is interpreted through the lens of long-term development.

FAQ

QUESTIONS?

What is the COPA Score?

The COPA Score is a full-spectrum, objective soccer assessment that measures your game in a controlled, data-driven environment. It evaluates your technical, physical, and cognitive skills — and even your skeletal age (if under 18) — to give you a complete, bias-free view of your development and potential.

Why do you assess skeletal age for players under 18?

Because players develop at different rates, calendar age doesn’t always tell the full story. Skeletal age allows us to measure how physically mature you are compared to your age group. This helps normalize your results so early or late bloomers are evaluated fairly. It ensures your performance is judged by what matters — your actual ability.

What does the COPA Score measure? How is it calculated?

Your COPA Score is built from a series of physical, technical, and cognitive tests. It includes sprint speed, agility, jumping ability, ball control, passing accuracy, reaction time, awareness, and more. If you’re under 18, we also assess skeletal age. All of this data is converted into a final score that reflects your overall performance and potential.

How does the COPA Score help me improve as a player?

After your test, you’ll get a detailed scorecard with metrics, rankings, benchmarks, and training recommendations. This gives you a clear understanding of your strengths and areas to focus on — so you can train smarter and see real progress.

Can the COPA Score help me get scouted or recruited?

Yes. The COPA Score is used by pro clubs, college programs, and national organizations to identify talent objectively. Standout scores can lead to invites for Talent ID events, direct outreach from scouts, and exposure to COPA’s trusted partners — even if you’re not in a major club or league.

How will I know if I get invited to a Talent ID Day or event?

You will receive an email (to the email address used to register) confirming that you have been invited to the Talent ID Day

How will I know if a club or college scout is interested in my profile?

If college scouts or pro scouts have identified you in our anonymous database, they will send a request to your club’s DOC or Coach initially, following regular process for contacting players. They will use the DOC or coach contact info your provided. In some cases, clubs may contact a player directly. Following this contact, COPA will not be involved and cannot control any outcomes.

Can I take the COPA Score more than once? How often should I re-test?

Definitely. Players are encouraged to re-test every 4–6 months to track progress and stay competitive. You’ll get new results each time, helping you measure growth and refine your training goals.

How much does the COPA Score cost?

A standalone COPA Score is currently priced at $199. If you’re a COPA STC member, it may be included as part of your membership, or offered at a discount depending on your plan. Periodically, free COPA Score initiatives are available thanks to sponsor support or partner talent ID pathways.*

*When free COPA Score initiatives are available, there will be a limit of one COPA Score per player.

How do I sign up for the COPA Score?

Register DaySmart, COPA’s registration platform:

  1. Go to the Register tab and choose the right athlete to register.
  1. Select the COPA Score tile and click through to select the appointment time and day.
  1. Fill in player info (position, foot, etc.)
  1. Choose whether to opt into the skeletal age test.
  1. Confirm and check out.

Make sure to fully check out to lock in your spot — you’ll receive a confirmation email once complete.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

If you’re outside the 24-hour window, you can cancel via the Activities tab in your DaySmart account. If it’s within 24 hours, contact Member Services for support. A late-cancel or no-show fee will apply if you miss your appointment without notice. If you are not able to reschedule on your own in your Activities tab, contact Member Services for support.

How should I prepare for the assessment?

Think of it like game day:

  • Get good sleep, hydrate, and eat a balanced meal.
  • Read the confirmation email with details on what to expect.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Bring indoor soccer or futsal shoes, water, and your typical training apparel.
What age groups can take the COPA Score?

All players ages 9 and up — youth, teens, and adults — can take the COPA Score. Your results are benchmarked against players your age and gender, and you can compare yourself to D1 players, European academies, and local academies.

I’m over 18. Is the COPA Score still relevant for me?

Absolutely. If you’re a college athlete, young adult, or aspiring pro, the COPA Score helps you gauge your readiness for the next level. Use it to stand out, fine-tune your training, and open up new playing opportunities.

I’m a coach, scout, or recruiter — how does this help me?

The COPA Score provides standardized, apples-to-apples comparisons of players across  ages, genders, and levels of play. It highlights performance traits that matter — from top speed to speed of play— so you can identify the right fit for your team based on objective data.

What if my child didn’t perform well — can they re-test soon?

Re-testing is best done every 4–6 months to show meaningful progress.

What happens after I take the test?

Within one week, you’ll receive a digital scorecard that includes:

  • Your raw scores
  • Percentile comparisons to age group and multiple reference populations
  • Your COPA training level

Your results may also qualify you for Talent ID events or invite-only partner sessions.
