These together create a goal that is carefully planned, clear, and trackable – all of which are needed to set yourself up for success.
As we learned in the S.M.A.R.T. Goals Part I
, being specific creates a concrete mission statement that keeps you focused and provides a finish line.
Now it’s time to move to the second step: Measurable.
Having and following concrete numbers gives a stable platform to work with. Tracking these numbers can really help answer a lot of the questions posed in Part I and provide a clear destination to work towards.
Measurable can be broken down further into two categories: time and performance. Time is focusing on how long a certain goal will take, while performance is the numbers being tracked while trying to complete the goal.
“I want to run a sub 5.0 40-m dash time for varsity tryouts in three months.” This specific goal gives a measurable number to reach as well as a timeframe to complete it in. By tracking the performance numbers over the course of those three months, we can also measure improvement growth.
Having a goal that is measurable creates a tangible goal that can be seen and felt, making it real.
